Or, Terrible Things That Have Happened in States That Passed Same-Sex …

Estheticians, like so many specialists, are the sort of people you find either by word of mouth or stabbing in the dark/trial and error. A facial, which usually starts with a commitment of around $60 and an hour or so of your time, is no minor purchase, and so recommendations are crucial to finding someone whose practices match up with your needs and comfort levels. For instance some people don’t like to deal with the heavy machinery that you can get into for microdermabrasion, ultraviolet light therapy, microcurrents, etc. Some people value all-natural products over everything, and in general people either get facials as part of the regular maintenance of their bodies, like going to the gym or dentist, or they do it every once in a blue moon just to pamper themselves. Or you have a specific problem that needs to be addressed, perhaps.

Most estheticians will cater to any one of these client profiles, but considering how overwhelmingly many options are out there, it’s worth it to seek out someone whose practices perfectly dovetail with your own. And there are more options than you may even know. Aside from the visible salon signs on the road, there are places ensconced on the upper floors of office buildings, people who work out of their homes, and still others who are tucked away off of busy commercial corridors.

The later situation is the case with Illume Day Spa, a petite, tranquil space located just off of Sandy Boulevard at 2453 NE Pacific. It’s the workspace of Cate Wheetman and Stara Laborde, a cozy environment with bowls of chocolates in seemingly every room.

  • Two, count ‘em, two bowls of chocolate in the waiting area,

On my visit, as I waited for Wheetman to finish with her previously client, I scoped out the all-important product wall, which features a comprehensive but well-edited selection of botanically based, high-quality lines like Astara, iS Clinical, and Epicuren. (One thing I will say about skincare products, is that you really do get what you pay for, and there’s something about your skin that is really bothering you it’s worth finding something that gives you real results, and you can certainly expect to pay more for it than anything you’ll find at Wallgreens. That said, don’t waste your money plunging blindly into a $60 face cream. Estheticians are loaded with product samples, and you should try as many as you can before taking the plunge. You know you’ve found the right one when it seems worth the money to buy.)

  • The all-important, always telling product wall.

Wheetman’s approach is based on what I think is the most logical thinking: That your skin’s needs are the same as your body’s. Your diet and lifestyle are—at least eventually—going to present a direct reflection onto your body, especially your skin. (Both Wheetman and Laborde were educated at The Euro Institute for Naturopathic Skincare in Renton, WA.) Illume specializes in working with clients in the long term to trouble shoot factors that might be provoking unwanted blemishes, dryness, puffiness, and other issues. And while she has a good number of plug-in toys at her disposal, once you’re in her hands you’ll find that she relies more on applications of some truly exquisite, personalized products than on her gadgets.

But the best thing about a facial with Wheetman is that it’s basically and two-in-one facial and massage. The Illumination signature facial includes serious attention to your skin as well as massaging of your hands, arms, calves, feet, and scalp. It is probably the most indulgent facial I’ve ever had in that regard and at $125 for 90 minutes of thoughtful skin therapy and ridiculously pleasant massage it’s a screaming bargain.

  • A treatment room at Illume.

If I were to imagine the perfect match-up between client and Illume, I would say that you 1) understand the symbiotic relationship between your overall health and appearance, 2) gravitate toward organic/holistic/all natural products, but make room for some exceptionally effective innovations, 3) aren’t particularly eager to break out the heavy machinery (but open to it when deemed advantageous), and 4) you know a good value when you see one—their facials start as low as $60 for 45 minutes.

I’ve only ever had a facial at Illume, but it’s also worth noting, if you like their approach, that they also offer body treatments like wraps, bronzing, and scrubs, waxing, brow and lash tinting. If it sounds like your jam, check ‘em out.

Body Beautiful Day Spa: Your man looking tired? Send him to get refreshed! – ABC15.com (KNXV

The New Gift for Men – Botox Juvederm
According to a recent ABC News story , Botox, or “Brotox”, is an increasingly popular gift for men. Who is giving men the gift of Botox? The surprise is that it is their wives!  More and more wives are telling their husbands to get both Botox and dermal fillers like Juvederm so they can keep up their appearance, especially when their husband complains about his appearance.

Men Want a Competitive Edge
The number of men using Botox is up almost 300% since it was approved for cosmetic use in 2002. This has partially been driven by today’s economy there is stiff competition from younger candidates, particularly in industries like sales, marketing, advertising, and real estate where a youthful appearance means better career prospects. Men who get Botox and dermal fillers like Juvederm to look younger and more energetic gain an advantage in interviews and even with clients. Men who get Botox and Juvederm are thrilled when people stop them, sometimes on the street, to tell them how great they look.

Botox Can Help Improve Mood
Botox and Juvederm do more than help increase men’s confidence and self-esteem. Botox alone can also help improve men’s mood. A 2008 study by Drs. Patrick Bowler and Michael Lewis found that patients who had been treated with Botox for glabellar (in between the eyes) frown lines were measurably less negative than their non-Botoxed control group. A 2009 study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology demonstrated that paralyzed forehead frown muscles made negative moods harder to maintain. Women who give their men the gift of Botox and Juvederm are getting the gift of a happier man.

About Botox
Botox has been in use for muscle spasm-related medical conditions since 1985. It was approved by the FDA for cosmetic use in 2002. Since then, Botox has become America’s #1 cosmetic procedures. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 2012 topped the Botox injection record with more than 6.1 million injections during the year.  Botox injections are virtually painless, and there is no down time. The effects of Botox manifest slowly over the next 7 to 14 days. People who see you frequently may not even notice the incremental changes. They may just notice you seem to be looking so much better! Botox lasts between 3 and 5 months, depending on your age, metabolism, and other factors.

About Juvederm
Juvederm is a dermal filler that restores youthful facial fullness, particularly in the “parentheses” or “smile lines” that run from the corners of your nose to the corners of your mouth. Juvederm is made of hyaluronic acid, which naturally exists in your body, particularly in your skin and cartilage. Any redness following a Juvederm injection usually subsides within the first day. The effects are immediate, and they last up to 12 months.

Day Spa Deal Breakers: 10 Things That Gross Us Out (PHOTOS)

It’s not often that we indulge in a little RR at a day spa, but once we book a salon appointment, we have really high expectations. If the experience isn’t absolutely amazing, why waste time or money when we could just do our own manicures, facials or bikini waxes at home? (Well, maybe not bikini waxes.)

In order to find the best day spas, we’ve had to encounter some shady situations. Below, 10 things that gross us out at the spa and warrant filing a complaint with the health department.

  1. Dirty robes and slippers. Finding old tissue stuffed into the pockets or getting worn shoes make us want to gag.
  2. Old body wax. If we can see hair and debris floating at the top, then it obviously hasn’t been changed since the previous session.
  3. Shaky massage tables. There is absolutely nothing relaxing about falling flat on your face in the middle of a deep tissue massage.
  4. Dried up nail polish. Keeping a rotation of new nail polishes is a no-brainer.
  5. Filthy floors. Stop right there and walk out.
  6. Stained towels. Not every mess is undetectable in thick, dark towels.
  7. Crumbling cushions. If we wanted to kick back in lounge chairs that looked like they were mangled by Cujo, we’d go to a trash dump.
  8. Lukewarm foot bath water. And don’t get us started on the foul odor.
  9. Too many estheticians for a single treatment. Not only is this unsanitary, but it makes tipping quite complicated.
  10. Greasy waxing table paper. Would you lie down on someone else’s body secretions? We think not.

What are your day spa deal breakers?

We hope these stars scoped out the scene first:

BEAUTY : Murrieta Day Spa groomed for success – Press

Despite a less than ideal location and economic ups and
downs, the Murrieta Day Spa Hair Salon continues to thrive and attract a
loyal following.

“It’s off the beaten path in a rural area,” said owner Monique DeGroot, 47.
(Many know her as Monique Suraci, but she restored her maiden name after
divorcing.) The spa, some say the oldest in the Temecula Valley, seems out of
joint on its half acre in a modest neighborhood across the street from a mobile
home park. “But it’s an oasis, a little gem, a secret getaway,” she said.

That’s because DeGroot has demanded nothing less than perfection, investing
more than $500,000 in constant upgrades, remodels and improved services since
she bought the property 16 years ago.

She expects revenues to hit close to $2 million this year, especially since
she’s added an intimate couple’s treatment room, landscaping for weddings and
parties, a clothing boutique and wine and beer.

DeGroot’s success also is a testament to the rejuvenation of the country’s
spa industry, now at $14.7 billion after taking a bath when the economy tanked.
In 2011, Americans made 156 million spa visits, according to the latest
information from the International Spa Association. The United States is home to
20,774 spas — 80 percent of them day spas.

“I thought we’d be doomed after 9/11, that no one would come,” DeGroot
recalls. The fallout from the collapsed housing industry and crushed economy in
2008 was “horrible,” she said. “I thought we’d close.”

Industry revenue plunged 4.9 percent in 2009 as consumers slashed spending on
such luxuries as spa treatments, according to IBIS World. However, as disposable
income and consumer confidence steadily rose over the next five years, the
health and wellness spas industry is glowing with health again and growing at an
annual rate of 1.3 percent, said IBIS World analyst Caitlin Moldvay.

At the Murrieta Day Spa, Khadijah Butler, 54, swaddled in a fleecy robe, a
warm herbal pillow clasping her neck, recently soaked her feet in fragrant, blue
water for an hour foot treatment. She opened her eyes only to sip iced water
topped with a fresh strawberry.

A client for 16 years, Butler, of Temecula, said: “I love the pampering, the
ambience, the people, the way they treat you.” A 10-year employee, pedicurist
Vicki Cruzzetti, scrubbed, massaged, creamed and applied warm stones and towels
to Butler’s feet and legs before painting her toes.

Virginia Conant said she prefers DeGroot’s intimate enclave to Glen Ivy in
Corona. “It’s a better experience here,” said Conant, 66, of Murrieta, as she
indulged in the same $39 pedicure as Butler. “They’re friendly and efficient
here. I had a wonderful massage and sauna before this.”

The Santa Monica-born and raised Monique DeGroot ended up in Murrieta because
its hot springs had lured her paternal grandparents to the area. Ronald and
Michele DeGroot, Monique’s dad and mom, decided to join them 25 years ago. The
couple sold their Venice beachfront restaurant and bought the 9,000-square-foot
building at 41885 Ivy Street — the former district office of the Murrieta
Unified School District.

In 1990, Michele DeGroot, an aesthetician who attended beauty school with
Monique, turned the property into a skin care, nails and hair salon. Four years
later Monique, married and pregnant with her first child, left her celebrity
hairstylist job on “Melrose Place” and relocated to Murrieta. It’s a decision
she doesn’t regret, giving high marks to the community where she’s raising her
sons, Anthony, 16, and Joey, 13.

“I’ve always loved the health business as much as the beauty business, making
people feel good about themselves,” Monique DeGroot said. “And I’m very close to
my parents.” She began renting the building from her father (and still does)
with plans to convert it into a day spa.

“I made bad choices, but I learned so much,” she said of those early
trial-and-error years. “I got smarter. We’ve grown much more sophisticated.”

Although a successful businesswoman, DeGroot still works two days as a
stylist and considers her employees and guests one big family.

She’s nearly doubled her staff to 43, half of whom have been on board a
decade or more. They tiptoe in and out of the 16 treatment rooms where facials
have overtaken massages in popularity and revenues.

Expanding the grounds and gardens to accommodate 150-person events has
created another income stream. The new clothing boutique, skin care, hair and
makeup products, also have proved to be money makers. So have spa memberships,
DeGroot said, which have attracted 400 guests with monthly discounted packages,
unlimited pool use, specials and VIP check-in. Spa member Lindsay Blue, 32, of
Murrieta, frequently comes to practice yoga, lounge by the heated mineral pool
and reboot. “The massages are superior to everywhere I’ve ever been,” she said.
Blue sat at a poolside table while enjoying a $10 tuna wrap from the spa’s café
— open to the public for breakfast and lunch.

“They even provide you with loaner bathing suits,” said her friend, Christina
Sellers, 37, of Temecula, as she bit into a $9 curried chicken salad.

DeGroot’s work is far from finished. She plans to add outdoor tables, chairs
and cabanas, maybe even jazz bands. “Electronic lockers are next,” she said
during a tour of the premises.

Business milestone: Amazing You Day Spa opens in Ormond – Daytona Beach News

The more than 60 people who turned out for the event included members of the Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce, said owner Gladys Allen, who joined the chamber in February, the same month she opened her business.

Allen previously was a marketing consultant in Ocala for a phone book company. She said she and her husband owned a beach house in Ormond-by-the-Sea and decided last year to move here permanently by making it their primary residence.

“I quit my stressful job and went to school for skincare,” said Allen, who added that running a day spa is “my passion. I’ve always been a spa junkie.”

Allen, who worked in marketing and sales for more than 20 years, said, “It’s been my dream to be stress-free and to help others be stress-free.”

The 2,000-square-foot spa has six employees and offers skin care, massage, body treatments, manicures and pedicures. Its hours of operation are 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. For more information: 386-236-9928.
