With stress levels in the city reaching new highs day after day, and with the harsh summer adding to the woes of Mumbaikars, the one business that seems to be rocking these days is the health spa. A larger number of people are willing to spend top dollar to get an hour’s worth of relaxation and rejuvenation therapy.

And the spas themselves are begining to get smarter and re conceiving more innovative products in their bid to beat the competition and grab your custom. Organic and natural products are more or less a given and no establishment worth its name would dream about functioning without them. But they aren’t enough to augment footfalls, which is why you have new products such as spa-on-wheels, packages for your poodle, and fish pedicures, among others.

Another noticeable trend is the increasing number of men who’ve started using the services of service providers in this space.

Then there is the concept of the couple spa which is gaining popularity. Says Shalini Chopra, a senior engineer in a software company: “I make it a point to take an appointment at my spa on Sunday noon along with my husband. This is the best way to pamper ourselves and get refuelled for another hectic week.”

Shreya Bachawat, a college student from Bandra says “These group buying sites like snap deal, crazeal have contributed a lot towards the promotion of spas. Being a student, I can’t afford to spend more on these luxury activities. So I daily keep on looking for offers at these sites.”

Sophear Mom Sreat also has an additional health spa called Le Chateau, located at Street 63 between Streets 360 and 362.

“What we have built is a unique concept even in the building itself with a high quality of service. We are a spa and massage as a combination. We have foot massage, body massage, aromatherapy,” she said.

“At all our outlets we have both male and female therapists,” she said.

At the U Me Spa on Street 206, a lot of customers come on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

“They can take a half day spa that includes three hours and they can take a massage for an hour and a half, a 45-minute body scrub and 45 minutes for steaming.”

Spas add new offerings as recession eases

<!–Saxotech Paragraph Count: 12

Infrared saunas

Cost: $1 per minute; reduced pricing with multiple-use packages; complementary add-on for some full-service salon/spa packages.

No, you won’t emerge well done, but infrared saunas use the same technology as infrared grills to heat your body, stimulating muscle relaxation and sweating. The one-person cubicles use heating panels that emit infrared radiation instead of steam or hot air. The saunas are offered as a standalone treatment or as part of destress and detoxification packages.

People can wear clothing, a bathing suit or a robe in the sauna. They spend 20 to 30 minutes in the cubicle for a treatment. Pregnant women shouldn’t use the sauna because it involves radiation. People should take medication at least four hours before a treatment or wait until they’re done. As with any heat therapy, people are encouraged to drink plenty of water.

“We have had an infrared sauna about two years, but it’s just now starting to become popular,” said Gena White, owner of Peace of Mind Center in Shreveport. “I sold gift certificates for the sauna this year.”

She noted that a mention by Dr. Mehmet Oz probably created more interest about infrared heat therapies.

“We get a lot of people in the military, and people in the movie industry who have been all over,” White said. “This year we’ve had people coming in who said, ‘Oh, I saw that in Dallas.’”

Pint-sized pedicures

Cost: $25 for a manicure/pedicure to $45 for a makeover package (individuals); $75 per child to $550 for a party package with up to eight children.

Beauty days aren’t just for bridesmaids anymore.

Spas and salons are going after younger customers with teen and tween services and packages. Offerings range from the standard manicure/pedicure combo to themed spa parties. Some, like Children’s Escape Spa in Bossier City, focus only on youngsters. Others, like Creme de la Creme Day Spa in Shreveport, make the parties a family affair.

“We wine and dine the parents while the children are getting services,” said Ruth Caldwell, who owns the business with daughters Cristy Jones and Ashley Wagner.

Creme de la Creme Spa started with the traditional grownup services when it opened nearly two years ago, then added manicures and pedicures for the under-12 set. Besides spa services, employees provide sweet treats and costumes with the party packages. Caldwell said the spa offers sophisticated touches, like a nonalcoholic signature drink and gift bags for every party goer.

“We do one or two parties a week,” Jones said. “It’s gotten to the point where we’re going to create a whole new website just for that. People don’t mind spending the money on their kids. I think they’re kind of tired of the bowling and skating and Chuck E. Cheese. They want something different.”

Spa-tacular trends

Instead of Botox injections or fish pedicures, in 2012, spa-goers may head to “amusement park” spas, request “snow showers,” or opt for wellness “coaching.”

These are among the new ideas in the recently released Spa Trend Report, which pin-points innovations in the industry. The annual report is based on visits to hundreds of spas and wellness centres by SpaFinder’s research team, along with interviews of industry leaders.

“After four tough economic years that made experimentation challenging, we are seeing the industry once again pushing the envelope with exciting ideas, delivering more wows, more fun, and quite serious wellness innovation,” said SpaFinder President Susie Ellis, who heads up the report.

SpaFinder’s top trends for 2012 include:

TREAT YOUR FEET

Perhaps our aging demographic – is behind the leading lead-for trend — treatments for “troubled tootsies,” which are popping up everywhere.

Canyon Ranch SpaClub in Las Vegas has a “Healthy Feet” program with gait analeatna’s analysis and zero-gravity treatment chairs, while Yamuna’s New York City boot-camps teach people to improve posmusc posture and strengthen foot muscles.

There are foot-focused sed “med-spas” such as California’s liforwhich Stride Wellbeing, which combines medical care with pampering. And “medi-pedis” developed by podiatrists, such as those at celebrity foot doctor Margaret Dabbs’ centres in London, or famed French foot expert Bastien Gonzalez’ pedicures at OneOnly resorts.

CHILL OUT

Cold treatments — ice chambers, snow showers and ice rubdowns–boost circulation and reduce inflammation in muscles and joints. (Might be a hard-sell to Canadians but Scandinavians have long alternated between a warm sauna and a bracing roll in the snow or dip in a cold lake.)

ESPAs now offer ice-rubdowns after saunas, while spagoers at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas can experience falling snow in the Arctic Ice Room. A new Snow Shower by Thermarium will hit spas soon, and for hardcore chill-seekers there’s cryotherapy, where you spend a few minutes in a chamber cooled to -120 C. It’s a highlight at B.C.’s Sparkling Hill Resort and California’s U.S. Cryotherapy centre.

COACHING

Health coach. Sleep coach. Eyebrow coach. Post-treatment ment wellness and beauty coaching allows patrons to stay in touch with practitioners in distant locations, making it easier to adhere to healthy lifestyle changes made during a holiday.

U.S. destination spas like Mii amo and Canyon Ranch have packages for follow-up coaching by phone, e-mail– even Skype. The trend has also hit the beauty business, with Clarins providing “beauty coaches” at its new flagship spa in Paris.

SPA, WINE AND DINE DEALS

Think of this as “healthy hedonism,” with new packages that combine spa treatments with good-for-you dining and wine pairing.

These include “culi-spa” weekends at San Francisco’s Cavallo Point, which feature excursions to local farmers’ markets, and packages like the “Plates and Pilates” retreat at Italy’s Cascina Papaveri, where guests harvest and cook their own food. In California’s Napa Valley, Auberge du Soleil has vinotherapy treatments with local wine selected by their sommelier.

GOOD VIBRATIONS

Music has long been recognized as theraputic. In 2012, look for treatments that include vibration, sound, light, colour and music to fully engage all the senses.

Pennsylvania’s Spa at Woodloch has Tibetan sound massage, which balances the body with vibrations from singing bowls. And more spas are adopting Ayurvedic techniques to correct chakra imbalances with colour therapy.

Other approaches include new saunas, steam capsules, lounge chairs, massage tables, tubs and experiential pods that weave light, colour, sound and music together for multisensory bliss.

At Miraval Resorts U.S. properties, the new Taiz Sensorium integrates vibration, music, base rhythms and elemental sounds from nature.

THE GLAM FACTOR

Quick and budget friendly beauty fixes like 10-minute manicures at airport salons, blow-dry bars, and walk-in makeovers are big.

“Blingy beauty” is hot, too, from flashy manicures with Swarovski crystals or holograms at Manhattan’s Spa Martier, to “creative” hair: Intricate braids, feathers, crystals and colourful extensions.

Guerlain Spa at NYC’s Waldorf Astoria has relaunched with a ’50s glamour sensibility. It ends each treatment with a complimentary makeup application or pressing service that sends guests away looking like they stepped off the page of a fashion mag.

Toronto’s Quartz Crystal Spa, opening Jan. 31 at Trump International, takes glamour a step further with ultra-lux interiors reminiscent of vintage Hollywood.

FAMILY TIME

Spas are becoming family friendly with more facilities and treatments for the under-18 set.

Spa parties, big with brides-to-be, now come in kid-friendly versions, while kid-specific day spas, such as Connecticut’s Sundae Spa, include playfully named treatments like “ice-cream pedicures” and “starfish sparkle manicures.”

The Omni Houston Galleria has kids’ spa packages, and Nickelodeon Suites in Orlando has a children’s spa. Germany’s Schloss Elmau and Disney’s new Aulani resort in Hawaii not only have spas designed for kids and teens but also baby-massage classes for parents, and other family oriented services.

THE “WOW” FACTOR

Increasingly, spas are going for the “wow” factor — from amusement and water park spas to Swarovski crystal spas.

Big wows include celebrity partnerships (Richard Branson speaking at Six Senses, Thailand; Mariel Hemingway serving as spokesperson for SpaFinder Wellness Week), futuristic designs like Milan’s bubble-themed Atomic Spa Suisse, or the treehouse concept at the Cocoon Spa at Indigo Pearl Phuket.

Small wows include amenities like the WaveMotion rocking massage table at Mii amo, which makes clients feel like they’re floating.

A new species of “amusement park” spas are catching on around the world.

In Estonia, the Kayley Sauna and Water Park features tube slides, bubble baths and every type of sauna imaginable. New York City’s Spa Castle is five storeys of fun — internationally themed saunas, steam baths and swimming areas plus a food court.

Center of Attention Day Spa offers wide variety of services

After a couple moved to the area 14 years ago, they decided to open the Center of Attention Day Spa, which has expanded to offer more services to the residents of Pine Island.

Owner Tonya Elder said she moved to Pine Island with her husband Bob from Indiana just to have a change of pace in life. She first stepped into the beauty industry 16 years ago in Indiana and has come to enjoy it more as the years pass.

“It is a happy environment,” Elder said. “Everyone walks out happy.”

The Elders opened a small shop in St. James City where she offered manicures, pedicures and acrylic nails. Elder did nails all by herself for three years until she moved to another location due to her increase in clientele.

Elder decided to further her education by acquiring her aesthetics license, which gave her the opportunity to expand the business into a full day spa. Once Center of Attention Day Spa moved to the Island Exchange building in the center of the island on Oct. 31, 2000, the business began offering massages, facials, along with body services.

“Center of Attention Day Spa strives to be a positive environment as well as a place for any individual to receive the most advanced and professional service,” Elder said.

The spa offers many services, including natural nails, acrylics, gel polish, along with a few different kinds of massages, facials and body scrubs.

The gel polish, which was a product they brought back from an annual beauty show a year and a half ago, has been a huge hit.

“Gel polish is a hybrid between a soak-off gel product and a nail polish,” Elder said. “The client can wear this thin gel polish color for 10 days up to three weeks. The product is soaked off with ease without damage to the natural nail.”

The spa has approximately 115 colors to choose from.

The spa also offers a few different massages for residents to take advantage of, including ashiatsu, cupping, relaxation, deep tissue, hot stone, trigger point and myofascial release. Chair massages, full body scrubs, seaweed and moor mud body wraps are also available.

Elder said ashiatsu is broken down into two meanings – ashi, which means foot, and atsu, which means pressure. In other words, it means barefoot massage.

“Our massage therapist will provide an incredibly deep massage, all while still being gentle,” she said. “This massage has become the most popular with athletes as they are muscle-bound and need a deeper massage.”

The technique is utilized by having stable bars secured from the ceiling that provide the therapist with the correct leverage needed to make long, strong strokes that cannot be achieved with the hands alone.

Another massage offered is the cupping technique, which is used for many purposes. Those who receive a cupping massage will benefit due to softening tight muscles, tone attachments, loosen adhesions and lift connective tissue, bring hydration and blood flow to the body’s tissue and drain excess fluids and toxins by opening lymphatic pathways.

“This technique benefits those with stagnate tissue or knots that basic massage does not address,” Elder said. “This type of massage also benefits those with conditions such as fibromyalgia and sciatica.”

An additional service the spa offers is skincare.

“We carry two different skincare lines that enables us to address all skin types,” Elder said.

This month the spa introduced microdermabrasion for skin resurfacing, ultrasound for deeper product penetration and seven LED lights. Red is used for energizing the skin and blue is used for acne and bacterial issues.

“These services, combined with the existing skin services, will fit the needs of someone wanting a relaxing spa facial all the way to a series of facials to concentrate on specific issues,” she said.

Elder is also a national educator for the skin care product Serene Professional Skincare.

“Serene is an anti-aging, result-driven line that’s active ingredients have been proven effective to stimulate the skin’s own repair and renewal process through glycolic acids and antioxidants for over 20 years within the medical and aesthetics field,” she said.

The spa also has tote bags, beaded clutches, journals, candles, room sprays, room diffusers, jewelry, bath and body products for sale.

Elder said she believes her spa is different from others because of the continued education she seeks, along with striving to keep up with new products and services.

“Every year the spa closes down for a short period so that we are able to attend the Premier Beauty Show in Orlando,” she said.

The licensed professionals that work with her also attend the show every year. Those individuals include Vonnie Bixby, who specializes in massage therapy; Kalyn Horney, who specializes in skin care and nails; Cindy Axler, who specializes in natural nails and Jackie Rummel, who specializes in skin care and nails.

The group of women attend classes, along with having the opportunity to view all the new products and techniques that come forth within that year.

Appointments are suggested for services at Center of Attention Day Spa, but walk-ins are welcome. The hours at the spa are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Appointments are available for services after 5 p.m.
