Prostitution arrest at San Mateo day spa
A day spa owner was cited and a masseuse arrested in downtown San Mateo Wednesday for prostitution activities at Celandine Day Spa, according to police.
Acting on complaints from local businesses, San Mateo police investigated the spa and developed evidence that showed acts of prostitution were taking place at the business at 155 E. Fifth Ave., directly across from Central Park.
Shuyi “Cece” Chen, 45, of Hayward, was arrested and booked into San Mateo County Jail for two counts of prostitution. The business owner, Michelle Yang, 41, of Daly City, was cited for several misdemeanor violations of the city’s code pertaining to the illegal operation of her massage business, according to police.
Yang denied any knowledge of the arrest when contacted by phone Thursday.
Deputy Chief Michael Callagy serves on a statewide committee to monitor and craft legislation that ensures that lawful massage businesses are protected and that illegal massage businesses are held accountable for unlawful activity.
“It is imperative that we safeguard the public by stopping human trafficking and exploitation that can take place in businesses that are fronts for prostitution. The healing profession of massage therapists deserve the good name of their profession to be without compromise and to that end we will act on any massage establishment that offers acts of prostitution,” Callagy said in a prepared statement.

East Day Spa owner’s Bali affair
East Day Spa owner Ina Bajaj tells us what it is that makes her so enamoured of her adopted second home.

Bali is a second home for East Day Spa owner Ina Bajaj, who owns a luxury retreat in rural Canggu. Her love affair with the Indonesian island, a mecca for spa junkies, began when she “ran away” to Bali and found her new love. Soon after, her other spas – Bajaj also owns East Day Spas in Auckland, Wellington, Queenstown and Melbourne – began adopting a strong Balinese flavour in design and therapies, and she bought land in Bali in 2008, opening the East Residence and Spa a year later. A decade after her first visit, Bajaj is now planning to expand and open a boutique resort.
“I love visiting Bali for the nature aspect, like the beautiful beaches and the emerald green rice fields, but it’s the freedom I enjoy most,” she explains of her adopted home. “The freedom of not living in an overly PC society, always watching ones Ps and Qs. I love being able to blast my music at full volume but at the same time, I exercise tolerance when the neighbours do the same.” Bajaj, who previously ran a restaurant in Wellington, loves the expatriate community too, as most are there by choice. “No one’s been transferred or been offered a high paying job – expats live in Bali mostly because they love the lifestyle and people.”
10 FAVOURITE THINGS
1. Donut chairs
My friend Dana makes most of the furniture for our properties. His major market is the Hawaiian one. The great thing about Dana is that nothing is a problem. When I needed outdoor furniture for my New Zealand home, I called Dana and we came up with his version of the “donut chair”. It’s comfortable and all-weather resistant.
2. Toraja carving
The Toraja are an ethnic group who live in the mountain regions of Sulawesi and their art is very tribal. For East Residence and Spa in Bali I purchased two antique Sulawesi warrior waistcoats that sit against whitewashed walls in our upper level hallways. I couldn’t resist this lovely Sulawesi guy who had a shop near the Kerobokan side of Sunset Rd. He did not speak a word of Bahasa, let alone English, but together we discovered his treasure trove and I bought a few Toraja carvings along with the warrior waistcoats.
3. Vespa
Our previous manager, Raka, used to have a business exporting reconditioned Vespas to Ibiza. I purchased one, picturing myself as Julia Roberts riding along the rice-fields. Having spent a small fortune getting it painted East Green, and with my fake L.V. leather helmet, I was armed to take on Canggu. But alas, the starter pedal for the Vespa is so heavy that with my Havaiana’s on I can’t get the darn thing to start. It won’t start unless I have biker boots on! Needless to say my beloved Vespa now sits proudly in the garage for guests to enjoy.
4. Lombok statues
During my first trip, when I did the procurement for East Day Spa Auckland, I stumbled across Jonathan Lombok pottery. Since 2005, the tiny corner shop has grown and now has a large factory warehouse in Kerobokan. I found the soldiers for the front of East Residence and Spa here, and when I moved into my current New Zealand home, I had a perfect alcove where they could play sentinel to my wellbeing.
5. Wayan Wijana and Mas Handewi
Two of my wonderful therapists from East Residence and Spa. I looked forward to and enjoyed so many treatments with Hani and Wijana, that I had to bring them with me. Hani is now based at our Sky City Grand Hotel spa and Wijana has just arrived and will be based at our new Spring FootSpa in Queenstown.
6. Light fitting
Carlo, an Italian who has spent many years in Bali, designs fantastic light-fittings for his shop Disini in Seminyak, Oberoi. We had a large, long 10-seater dining table, and Carlo designed a magnificent light fitting that acts as a canopy over the entire thing and a feature to the room.
7. Land
The best thing I ever bought in Bali was the land East Residence and Spa now sits on. It was after the second bombing and Bali was deserted. No tourists were coming near the island, and hotel occupancies were down to all-time lows. For me this did not stop the love affair I had with the island and against all professional advice we acquired a hectare of land.
8. Bali peanuts
Ever wonder how they get their satay sauce tasting so good? It’s the peanuts. These garlic flavoured peanuts are worth going through the red channel at Customs for, and are available at Carrefour and all supermarkets.
9. Day bed
Raka and I found this piece when we used to pound the pavements of Ubud. We were at an art gallery when we saw this day bed by reception. I asked the owner, and he laughed and said “I sell it to you, but my wife will kill me, it belonged her family”. Oh my God, it had history, so I wanted it more. So I said “go call your wife”. After an hour of hilarious bargaining we sealed the deal.
10. Fashion items
Forget Kuta and Legian and head down to Jalan Oberoi – hand-made shoes that would give Jimmy Choo a run for his money, fantastic jewellery and beautiful silk georgette numbers. Stop off at the Red Carpet Champagne Bar to rest your feet, and head down this shoppers’ paradise street. As well as the Shakahuchi shop, you can find global brands and designers that create bespoke one-off items. Then end your day with a sundowner at Ku De Ta.

Canton spa owner indicted on prostitution charges
A woman who owned spas in Canton, Brockton and Norwood was indicted March 30 in connection with prostitution charges at the spas, Attorney General Coakley announced.
Terry Mussari, 45, of Stoughton, was indicted by a Statewide Grand Jury on charges of deriving support from prostitution (3 counts), owner of a place of prostitution (3 counts), keeping a house of ill fame (3 counts), minimum wage violation (3 counts), and failure to provide suitable paystub (3 counts).
“We allege that this defendant regularly arranged for sexual services to be given at the three spas she owned,” Coakley. “Our office will continue to prosecute cases in which legitimate businesses serve as fronts for illegal activities.”
In spring 2011, State Police assigned to the Attorney General’s Office, in conjunction with the Boston office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, began an investigation into allegations of prostitution at three spas owned and operated by Mussari. The three spas were Aria Day Spa in Brockton, Sparkle Day Spa in Canton, and Spa Bellissimo in Norwood. During the course of the investigation, authorities said they developed evidence indicating that all three spas were allegedly offering sexual activity between masseuses employed by Mussari and their clients in exchange for cash that was characterized as “tips.”
In October 2011, State Police officers assigned to the Attorney General’s Office, along with local and federal authorities, executed search warrants at all three spa locations. Authorities subsequently arrested Mussari at the Aria Day Spa in Brockton and she was arraigned in Brockton District Court Oct. 24.
She is scheduled to be arraigned in Norfolk Superior Court at a later date.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Anne Kaczmarek of AG Coakley’s Enterprise and Major Crimes Division, with assistance from State Police assigned to the AG’s Office. The Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office, the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office, the State Police CAT team, the State Police Division of Field Services, the Boston office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Canton Police and the Norwood Police also assisted in this case.
Theatre: Enjoy a night of Guilty Pleasures at the Key Theatre

Theatre Productions UK Limited is proud to announce the world premiere of Guilty Pleasures, a raunchy and risqué comedy set in a steamy ‘ladies-only’ health spa.
Written by Ron Aldridge, directed by Stephen Leatherland, and featuring an all-star cast, Guilty Pleasures is the next laugh-out-loud farce from the producers of the smash-hit comedy The Naked Truth.

The cast is headed by a trio of high-profile hunks: Craig Chalmers (Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat a runner-up from Any Dream Will Do), Marc Bannerman (Gianni di Marco in EastEnders and former I’m A Celebrity . . . Get Me Out of Here! contestant) and CJ de Mooi (Eggheads).

Get Me Out of Here! contestant), while model-turned-actress-and-presenter Terri Dwyer (Hollyoaks; Grange Hill) takes on the role of his put-upon and over-worked secretary, Tilly, Pauline Fleming (Coronation Street; Brookside) plays man-eating minx Mrs M, and Alexis Strum plays naïve new-member Judy.

A percentage of the profits from the production shall go to raising awareness and money for Everyman, the UK’s leading prostate and testicular cancer charity.

DayDreams Day Spa Reports Increased Demand for Brandon Massage and Spa …

DayDreams Day Spa
Customers are growing frustrated with discount massage establishments.
Brandon, FL (PRWEB) February 29, 2012
DayDreams Day Spa reverses current economic trend.
Although government reports seemed to indicate that the economy improved slightly in 2011, many local business owners argue that it was not reflected in their annual sales, especially in harder hit states like Florida. The overall trend seemed to be flat to little growth and for many, a further decline compared to 2010.
However, Florida Day Spa owner Jan Jordan of DayDreams Day Spa recently reported that 2012 is pointing to a significantly higher demand. “We started seeing a noticeable uptick in sales in December of 2011, and that momentum has remained strong through February of 2012.” She indicated that although her customers have shown strong demand in all areas of spa treatments, Brandon Massage services saw the highest.
“I believe it was due to a slow but gradual economic recovery and the fact that customers are growing frustrated with discount massage establishments. When the recession hit in 2009, their investments were plummeting and job security was a major issue. I think most of them felt they had to find a low cost option in order to continue receiving regular massage treatments, which was understandable. A common complaint we heard was that although they appreciated a lower priced option, they just didn’t receive a true spa experience. As the economy is improving, they are able to explore more options.”
She was cautious to claim a full economic recovery pointing out that job growth is stagnant, the unemployment rate is still high and the real estate market is quite weak, all weighing heavy on recovery efforts. She also points out that her online Spa Marketing efforts will be more aggressive than ever in 2012. However if the trend over the last quarter continues, 2012 looks promising.

5 killed in possible murder-suicide at Georgia health spa

NORCROSS, Ga. – A gunman shot four people to death inside a Korean health spa in Atlanta’s suburbs and then killed himself in what police said may have been a case of domestic violence.
Surveillance video showed a man walking into the Su Jung Health Sauna on Tuesday night and getting into an argument with someone, then opening fire, police said.
“It appears he walked in, had some conversation with one of the victims and the shooting started,” Norcross Police Chief Warren Summers told WAGA-TV.
Investigators finished interviewing witnesses Wednesday morning, Norcross police Capt. Brian Harr said. He said the shootings were not random.
“It’s probably domestic-related,” Harr told The Associated Press, adding that more information would likely be released later Wednesday.
Yellow police tape surrounded the large parking lot in front of the stand-alone brick building with decorative white columns and white Greek-style statuary. The spa is located on a busy highway lined with strip malls and small businesses, many with signs in Korean and English. It was closed Wednesday.
Police said the dead were three men and two women. Four people were found dead inside, and another was taken to a hospital before being pronounced dead, investigators said.
Investigators say they believe about 20 people were inside the spa when the gunfire began around 8:30 p.m.
Sonny Lee, who owns Lee’s Auto Center next door to the spa, said the owner had been in the community for about 15 years and had recently remodeled his business. Lee said the spa owner was very community-oriented.
“He donated a lot to the different things in the Korean community,” Lee said.
Police have not identified the victims yet.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation joined the probe, GBI spokesman John Bankhead said.
“We actually sent two crime scene specialists, given the situation out there with the number of people who were shot and killed,” Bankhead said.
He said investigators were using 3-D technology that was designed for architecture and construction jobs and is now being used in some investigations to recreate crime scenes.
The spa is about 15 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta, on Buford Highway between Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and Interstate 85 in Gwinnett County.
