The Lodge at Woodloch Makes the Earth Turn

HAWLEY, PA, May 02, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) –
After last summer’s announcement that 75 acres of private land
would be added to the surroundings at The Lodge at Woodloch, a spa
resort, management wasted no time in crafting plans about how best to
put the land to use. Gathering together several masterminds to create
the ultimate garden, the plan was created through the expertise of
newly-appointed Outdoor Adventure and Grounds Manager Josh Heath,
Executive Chef Peter Schott, Master Gardener Alison Peck, and Organic
Advisor and former Executive Director of the Northeast Organic
Farming Association of New York Greg Swartz of Willow Wisp Organic
Farm. With a common goal of creating the ultimate garden for the spa
resort’s TREE Restaurant as well as a learning environment for the
guests and community, the masterminds went to work.

The new Farm-To-Table Garden measures approximately 100′ wide x 170′
deep and is within walking distance of the 57-room destination spa
resort. While building the footprint of the farm, a 50-year old
handcrafted cistern was discovered which will eventually be restored
and used as a resource to help water the plants along with rainwater
management techniques. In addition, three compost bins were created
to ensure a constant supply of fertilization and food recycling.

The Farm-To-Table Garden will provide a selection of vegetables and
herbs that will be used at TREE Restaurant. In addition, occasional
Farm-To-Table cooking demonstrations and outdoor community-style
dinners will be served right by the garden. On Earth Day, new
gardening classes will begin, during which guests will learn
practical tips to use in their own gardens.

“It was important that we planned this garden with every
consideration of the environment. Knowing the importance of every
detail, we elicited the help of Organic Advisor Greg Swartz to help
ensure our organic practices were established from the start,”
explains Paul Fitzpatrick, managing director of The Lodge at
Woodloch. In addition to the Farm-To-Table Garden, the property will
provide new walking trails and a Wildlife Overlook. Also in the plans
are distinctive relaxation nooks throughout the property to help
guests unwind and truly let nature nurture.

Relax and rejuvenate at Malaysia’s famous spas

With ever increasing stress and day-to-day pressures, there is no time like the present to take a break and relax at one of Malaysia’s world renowned spa resorts. An integral part of Malaysian culture, many spas can be found in Kuala Lumpur but are mostly hidden amongst the white sands and palm trees of beach resorts and amid the mountainous rainforests.

Nothing could be more relaxing than listening to the live sounds of the rainforest or the gentle lapping of the waves and inhaling the healing sea breeze whilst an expert Malay masseur alleviates muscular aches and pains, knowing that you have saved 23% on a 10-night stay at a Langkawi Spa Resort and 20% on all treatments. There are a variety of value for money packages available from Flight Centre, Hayes and Jarvis, Kuoni and Trailfinders.

Health and wellness therapies have long been embedded in Malaysian culture and have now become something of a fine art. Because of the rich diversity of cultures, there are a vast number of therapy types and techniques that have been passed down through the generations.

Malaysia spa treatments have essences of Javanese remedies and ancient Indian Ayurvedic medicines as well as Chinese Shiatsu practices amongst others. Spa treatments involve herbal baths, exotic massage oils and full body scrubs, using coconut milk, aloe vera, crushed herbaceous leaves and palm sugar.

Most spa resorts, like the world famous spa village of Pangkor Laut, also come complete with steam rooms, saunas, Jacuzzis and pools to ensure a detoxifying and rejuvenating experience.

Manchester, Cheshire (PRWEB UK) 6 April 2012

Cheshire based luxury tour operator Only Exclusive Travel today announces that the Maldives is the most popular honeymoon destination in the world. The Maldives is an Indian archipelago which lies off the West coast of India. It is home to 26 atolls which are famous for postcard perfect white sand beaches.

Honeymooners love the Maldives for its 5 star spa resorts. The more luxurious resorts usually have their own island and a small number of villas. Soneva Fushi by Six Senses is the perfect example of a luxury spa resort. Only Exclusive Travel is currently offering 7 night for the price of 5 for a couple who wish to stay on the unpopulated 1,400 metre long island of Kunfunadhoo.

The resort’s villas are well spaced out around the island, which provides newlyweds with privacy. The island is rich in greenery which makes each villa feel like it is on it’s own beach. Couples can expect 5 star personal service. Dining can be enjoyed on the villa balcony, or on the beachfront with fire lanterns. Spa services and world class scuba diving are also available.

Only Exclusive Travel is also running special offers on many other Maldives honeymoon resorts. This includes the unique Soneva Gili, also by Six Senses, which is an all water villa resort, also on it’s own private island. The Huvafen Fushi resort is also very popular, even more so since a multi-million dollar re-furbishment. Guests to this world class resort can experience the first underwater lime spa in the world.

Packages offered by Only Exclusive Travel include flights and transfers. This summer the tour operator will team up with Qatar Airways to provide honeymooners with the most luxurious air travel. Qatar Airways is soon to unveil new Business Class seats which offer touch screen Android control panels and other high-tech features. The seats will be available on the airline’s new 787s, with just 22 seats allocated for Business Class. This means newlyweds can enjoy their 22-inch wide armchairs with more space than ever before.

How Victorian police spent $3.5 million on 250 taxpayer-funded credit cards

COPS

Source: Herald Sun

VICTORIA police have used taxpayer-funded credit cards to buy gifts, fast food, doughnuts, artwork and spa resort accommodation.

Documents obtained under Freedom of Information laws by the Sunday Herald Sun show more than $3.5 million was spent on 250 publicly funded corporate credit cards in the past three financial years.

Among more than 13,000 transactions are tens of thousands of dollars spent on flowers, alcohol and fast food.

According to police rules, the Visa cards, held by senior sworn and unsworn members, are meant to be used for ”critical incident procurement”.

Transaction reports show the cards have been used for payments to cinemas, ten-pin bowling, concert tickets, golf clubs, go karting, magazine subscriptions, bedding, jewellery and even a company that sells dolls’ houses and accessories.

The bank statements span 325 pages and show $1588 spent on glass artwork, $22,464.79 on flowers, $11,221.39 on fast food and $3263.67 on alcohol.

The Chief Commissioner’s office has spent almost $150,000 on 17 credit cards, including on chauffeur-driven cars, glass artwork and stays at country spa resorts and the five-star Palazzo Versace on the Gold Coast.

Other police departments have spent public funds on massages, Mornington Peninsula’s hot springs, thousands at golf clubs and online golf stores and more than $3000 on artwork.

“Cardholders must always act in the interests of the state, as opposed to their own personal interests or convenience and must perform their duties honestly, with skill and care,” the Department of Treasury and Finance rules state.

Some transactions show obvious work-related expenses, such as a $390 purchase at a ski shop for tyre chains for a search and rescue operation.

Victoria Police said it carried out regular reviews and “there have been no reportable breaches”.

But it admits knowing of one private purchase of around $20 that was made inadvertently. The money was repaid.

The documents also show more than $6000 was spent at Barbecues Galore, hundreds at ticket agencies and the Home Barista Institute, $800 at Ace Karts and at least three purchases at baby gift stores.

At least one card has a maximum spending limit of $25,000. Most have a maximum limit of between $2000 and $3000.

The highest transaction was for $5892.08 at a hotel in mid-December last year.

Other purchases include $1216 at the Village cinema at Crown and $386.30 at St Kilda Sea Baths followed by $412.80 at the nearby Beachcomber Cafe on Christmas Eve.

There are also payments for a $758.80 roller that picks up nuts and $59.70 at Koorong Books – a Christian bookshop in Blackburn South.

Police Association Secretary Greg Davies said the purchases “beggar belief”.

“These cards do help members book conference rooms at short notice and things like that but I am damned if I know why glass artworks, massages, spa resorts and cinemas are being booked out,” Sen-Sgt Davies said.

“It beggars belief that these purchases are being made at a time when operational police struggle to find a working computer … in order to do their job.

“I would hope Chief Commissioner Ken Lay tightens the reins on this spending.”

The transactions include $1588 at Kirra Gallery and $345 at Madison Spa Resort.

On Wednesday, the Sunday Herald Sun asked Victoria Police to explain 70 purchases. Spokeswoman Anna Erbrederis said the force would explain only 20 that it had selected.

Of those, massages were given to data-entry staff, artwork was bought for Box Hill Police Station, alcohol was bought for conferences and functions and three gifts were bought.

There was also $2248 spent at Macedon Spa for “work-related travel”.

Krispy Kreme doughnuts, karaoke, sporting memorabilia and $96.78 at Harrods in London was also deemed correct use of the credit cards by Victoria Police.

“All transactions were for Victoria Police work-related expenditure and none were in regard to personal use,” a spokeswoman said.

“The purpose of the corporate card is to make simple purchases. It is considered easier to use the corporate card and a lot more effective than having employees pay for the goods and then reimburse them.

“Any Victoria Police permanent employee – sworn or unsworn – can request a corporate card with justification and is subject to the approval by local managers and department or region heads. As a general rule, a corporate card should be used for one-off, ad hoc purchases, rather than for the payment of ongoing contracts and services. There are clear consequences if cardholders misuse their cards or if there is unauthorised use.”

She added the credit cards can be used for flight and hotel bookings if “out of normal business hours”, but it is not encouraged.

Travel: Want to try a new winter sport? Go back to your youth . . .

A mountain hut on the slopes above Bad Hofgastein, Austria

This Sunday (Jan 22) sees the bobsleigh teams take to the tracks for the final event in the 10-day-long games for 15-18 year-olds. I was in Austria as the Youth Winter Olympics kicked off, and heavy snowfalls kicked in.

When the Olympic competitors take to the bobsleigh this Sunday for the final event in the Youth Olympic Games, I’ll spare them a thought.

I know what it’s like to hurtle down a track clinging on to a sleigh. Well, Ok, to be precise, toboggan. And I’ve got to say, it’s the most fun night out I can remember…

As I hurtled along  a snowy forest path that looked like something a out of Narnia, shrieking with laughter, it was the first time I’d been on a wooden sleigh since I was nine. And, what a fabulous way to turn back the years.

You can’t beat a toboggan to get back from a night out!

I was staying in Bad Hofgastein, a spa resort just 80 minutes drive from Saltzburg airport, on a Ski Freshtracks weekend holiday organised by the Ski Club of Great Britain. The town is little known to the UK market, has over 220km of pistes.

After a day’s skiing we decided to sample some of the best après ski around– dinner in what is billed as Europe’s oldest mountain restaurant, the Bellevue Alm.

It’s was a 20 Euro taxi ride away from our hotel to the next door village of Bad Gastein, but worth every penny.

The taxi deposits you at the bottom of a hill where the only way up is on a one-man chairlift. On the way, you dangle over tall snow-covered pine trees before the twinkling lights of the restaurant are suddenly spotted as you reach the top.

Arriving at the restaurant is such fun… and that’s even before a drink!

After a meal of, what else, but a traditional meat fondue at € 26.90 a head… washed down by bottles of red wine, a glass of Schnapps arrived, for ‘Dutch courage’.

Er, that’s because a toboggan ride down is quite a scary prospect, at first. The trick is to dig your heels is to slow you down. Effective, but a little hard on the muscles!

Suddenly you arrive at the top of  mountain and the Bellevue Alm

No worries, we were staying at the four star Kur Sport Palace Hotel, just a five minute stroll from the luxurious Alpentherme health and leisure complex. A dip in the thermal waters proved perfect for easing off those aching muscles before hitting the slopes again. Wonderful..

Swim in the open air surrounded by snow at The Alpentherme Spa

The spa also has a family pool and kids of any age can swim inside an impressive multimedia ‘mountain’ where films are shown as you swim – though they are, of course, in German.

Talking a bikini on a ski trip had seemed strange, but without it I wouldn’t have been able to enjoy my favourite part of the visit – swimming outside in the warm mineral waters, which worked a treat to ease those aching muscles. At dusk the pool was lit by the spectacular glow of lights as snowflakes gently fell onto my hair. Magical.

Back inside the complex, it was time to strip off. As in other Austrian saunas, ‘au natural’ is the rule of the day. Was I really ready to get to know my male colleagues that well? I was saved by the discovery of the ‘lady’s zone’ at the Alpentherme. Inside this little haven relaxing lounge beds and free tea are on offer as well as an extensive selection of treatments.

But, everything in moderation. After a final relax in the warm Jacuzzi I decided to check out the spa’s bar… and a glass of the local beer!

Ski Club leaders Vicky and Vanessa were with us all the way

If you don’t want walk across the park, the hotel itself has its own pool, though I confess, I didn’t find time to try it, I was too busy on the slopes.  Ski buses run from just outside the hotel and reception staff speak English and are very helpful.

With a total of around eight weeks skiing under my belt, I class myself as a confident ‘intermediate’ on piste skier. The beauty of these trips as that everyone is grouped with others of the same standard and Ski Club Leaders accompany each Freshtracks holiday. and are on hand both on, and off the slopes.

Vicky and Vanessa organised us into two ‘ability’ groups, organising a taxi to get us from our hotel to the slopes and arranged a group ski lesson with the lovely Roland from the Ski Race Academy Gastein for my team.

Instructor Roland lets me catch my breath on the snowy slopes above Bad Hofgastein

This came at an added cost but proved invaluable as the buckets of snow that fell throughout our January trip meant that visibility was poor.  It was wonderful to be with someone who knew the area so well. It also meant that, with an avalanche risk, some of the higher runs were closed. No matter, he planned ahead and took us on a circuit which ended nicely at a fabulous hut for lunch.

And, he so instilled me with confidence that, when he said, “follow me…” I, like the others in the group, happily obliged. Following in his tracks off the side of the slope as he gave us our first mini taste of off piste skiing.  It was brilliant! And, when we collapsed in laughter when we, quite literally, disappeared under mounds of snow, he was there to dash over and dig us out.

…Ski Club leader Vicky shows the right way to ski off piste!
