Dads lose out to moms on Mother’s Day
According to the The National Retail Federation’s 2012 Mother’s Day Survey, total Father’s Day spending is expected to reach $11 billion this year in the US. Not bad, you say. Not until you realize that it’s nine billion dollars less than what they’ll spend on their moms! Australia ranks even worse, where the average kid will spend $60 on his/her mom, while dad’s share is just half at $29.50. In India too, the story is no different.
Kishi of Foodaholics, a desserts and cakes shop in Delhi, maintains that the shop does not give the step-child treatment to Father’s Day. For every pink-frosted Mother’s Day cupcake, she has a special liquor chocolate or shirt-shaped cake for the gentlemen. And yet, she says, “I always have more orders on Mother’s Day than Father’s Day. I’d say my orders are literally double on Mother’s Day!” Ditto for Rajat Gulati, owner of Two Little Birds, a dessert and chocolate boutique. He says, “Our sales on Mother’s Day are 60% more than those on Father’s Day.”
“An occasion like Mother’s Day grabs more eyeballs than Father’s Day. We believe that Indian customers are still more attached to their mothers,” says Pawan Gadia, CEO, Ferns N Petals – a flower and gifting company. “In our retail outlets, sales increase by 35-40%, while on Father’s Day, the average increase is only 12-15%. In fact, after Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day is our biggest-selling day.” While Mother’s Day is second on their list of the biggest-selling days, Father’s Day doesn’t make it.
“Father’s Day is much smaller in India and globally. ‘Why’ is anybody’s guess,” says Yohan Aria from Archies Gallery. “For us, Father’s Day is 60% of what Mother’s Day is. The build-up to Father’s Day is not much, even though we treat both the days as the same in terms of marketing. Though Father’s Day and Mother’s Day have both grown over the years, I’d say Mother’s Day, being more mass, has experienced greater growth across every industry, including technology and clothing.”
In the technological sphere, which is largely considered a male domain, one would think daddy would rule the roost, but the sales on both days are either equally high, or there is an equal amount of lull. When we spoke to Apple, they said that they don’t experience any out-of-the-ordinary sales on Mother’s or Father’s Day. RIM spokesperson (Blackberry), Sachit, told us, “Most of our devices are ideal for both men and women. In fact, a lot of our products and services are now targeted exclusively at women too. So the spike in sales is equivalent around both days.”
There is no concrete reason why Father’s Day lags behind Mother’s Day. Even when quizzed, most youngsters said the reason they spent more on mom was because she expected them to, and because dads are less finicky. Ray Sharma, 24, a media analyst, says, “My mom usually expects something, so I do give her gifts on Mother’s Day. For dad it’s usually simple, because he is not into ‘these things’.” Puneet Arora, 18, a DU student, says, “My mom kicks up a big fuss if I don’t get her something. She keeps a track of the date of Mother’s Day and everything. I don’t think my dad even knows Father’s Day exists.”

TOP 10 ways to mend a broken heart by author Jess Rothenberg
Sort out your love life with The Catastrophic History of You and Me author Jess Rothenberg
Think there’s no such thing as death by broken heart? Think again! Broken Heart Syndrome might be rare, but it still happens more than you’d think. And even when heartbreak isn’t lethal, it sure can feel like it. You know you’ve been there. That whole can’t get out of bed, can’t go to work, can’t stop staring at his or her Facebook profile pic while gorging yourself on Häagen-Dazs… when all you can do is crank up Adele on repeat, break out your childhood teddy bear, and hope your best friends eventually send in a search party.
But don’t despair. That achy-breaky heart beating pathetically inside your chest is far more resilient than you might think. (How would any of us have possibly survived middle school, otherwise?) So before you go dying on me this Valentine’s Day, here’s a list of surefire ways to help mend that broken heart before you wind up pining away from the Great Beyond..

1. THROW YOURSELF A PITY PARTY. You heard me. It’s time to draw the curtains, break out the tissues, cue up that disgustingly romantic playlist he (or she) made for you on your last birthday, and sob your ever-loving face off. Give this relationship a proper sendoff. This is the time to indulge; to wallow; to revel in the Shakespearean despair of it all. So feel it, face it, own it. Your roommates might think you’ve lost your mind after the twenty-seventh round of Someone Like You, but what do they know? It’s all part of the process.
2. JUST BREATHE. Once the sun’s up and your tears have ceased long enough for you to crawl out of bed and *attempt* getting dressed (this step may take a few tries, don’t be alarmed), it’s time to give some serious TLC to the person who needs it most: YOU. So throw on your best disguise, grab your keys, and get thee to a funnery, stat! Spa weekend? Check. Hair appointment? Double Check. Retail therapy? Yes, yes and yes. If it helps you unwind, de-stress, and (most importantly) breathe, you’re on the right track.
3. FIND AN OUTLET. No, not of the electrical variety. I mean buy a journal, write some bad poetry, get out that guitar and sing like you’ve never sung before. Not only will it feel incredible to release some of those gloomy feelings, but who knows? Maybe you’re the next Taylor Swift just waiting to be discovered.
4. SIMON SAYS HIT DELETE. This may be the toughest step you’ve had to face yet, but it’s one of the most important. For the time has come to unfriend, detweet, and DELETE this person from your immediate reach. Don’t freak out, I do not mean forever. I just mean for a little while, until you’ve got your head screwed back on properly and can be trusted not to text or call or stalk certain people’s Facebook pages every three seconds to check their photo albums and/or relationship statuses. I know you’re hurting. And I know you’re feeling desperate. But trust me, obsessing will not help you move forward. And as long as you have easy access to those old familiar sources, we both know you’re going to check them like a journalist gone mad. So do yourself a great big favor and JHD. (Just Hit Delete.) (Or at least Unsubscribe.)

More than 6 in 10 people nationwide will watch a movie on Valentine’s Day.Romantic comedies top the list as best movie genre for date nights. Laugh-out-loud comedies and new releases follow after that.Nationwide, “The Notebook” won as people’s favorite movie love story.Nearly half of people nationwide hope to get a thoughtful card this Valentine’s Day, while flowers, candy and jewelry also rank high on the list.More people would rather eat a homemade meal on Valentine’s Day than go to a restaurant.Source: Redbox news release
A fancy dinner out? It’s not worth it. Flowers and chocolates? Let them rot on store shelves. And those mushy love notes? Don’t even waste your ink.
Just forget it all, because romance is dead. At least, that’s what Redbox says.
The movie rental company ranked Victoria the nation’s fourth least romantic city, based on the number of swoon-worthy flicks rented in 2011.
Victoria joins three other Texas cities on that list, including Laredo, which fills the No. 1 spot for the second year running. Adding insult to injury, the Lone Star State held a whopping zero spots on Redbox’s list of most romantic cities.
The lackluster ranking came as a surprise to Torin Bales, who owns Torin Bales Fine Jewelry at 6007 N. Zac Lentz Parkway. In his line of business, he said, he sees the more loving aspects of people’s day-to-day lives.
“Today I’ve heard three or four stories from people who are going to propose and the romantic ways they’re doing it,” he said Monday. “I think this is a very romantic city.”
Laurie Custer, who owns Body Boutique Day Spa at 3902 John Stockbauer Drive, Suite D, agreed with Bales. She said people venture in all the time to buy spa packages for the ones they love.
The romance doesn’t end with customers, either.
Love-themed movies are Custer’s favorite, she said, and especially those with happy endings. She watched “The Notebook” the other day and, on Saturday, celebrated her first anniversary with her husband with a trip to see “The Vow.”
“There’s still romance out there,” she said with a chuckle.
Not everyone disagrees with Redbox’s summation.
Victoria West High School student Diana Lara said she wouldn’t describe Victoria as a romantic place, partly because the restaurants and attractions available mean there aren’t many places for couples to go.
On Friday, the high schooler, who said she prefers scary or action-packed movies, rented “Restless” from a Navarro Street Redbox kiosk.
Stephanie Urbano visited that same kiosk Friday with her son for a quick trip to pick up “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.” Although she said Victoria’s spot on the list didn’t surprise her, she said the city’s romantic value depended on who you asked.
A single person might venture out to Houston or Austin to find that spark of love, she said, while a married couple can find things to do in their hometown.
Victoria’s a family-oriented city, she added, explaining that affects people’s movie preferences. Her family’s picks include action and kids’ movies more than anything else.
“I know husbands and wives try to take time for themselves, but when you have little ones, it’s really hard sometimes,” she said.

Lovely ideas for your Valentine
By Richard Blackledge
Published on Monday 13 February 2012 09:49
With the day of romance just 24 hours away, Richard Blackledge spoke to a florist and a chocolatier in Sheffield to find out why couples can’t fail with these ideal last-minute presents.
TRADITION rules when it comes to Valentine’s Day, according to florist Sarah Whitaker – who’s expecting to be faced with a rush of customers today requesting red roses.
Sarah, who runs the Bouquet florist’s shop in Crookes along with her mum Ruth Bunting, said some well-prepared partners placed their flower orders well in advance, but that the business is opening late tonight to cope with demand from last-minute gift buyers.
“It’s not been too bad this year,” said Sarah, whose mum has owned the shop for 24 years.
“I think it may be a little bit slower this year, a bit more last-minute in the current financial climate. I don’t think anybody really knows what to expect.
“Valentine’s Day is a busy one. We’ve still had customers coming in at 10.30pm and 11 o’clock the night before. We usually burn the midnight oil, then go home for a few hours’ sleep and come back at 6.30 the next morning.”
Sarah said that while roses are still holding strong as the most popular Valentine’s bloom, customers are also warming to tulips as a romantic flower.
“The favourite is still the red rose, I would say. That’s been the most popular up to now, and after that it’s tulips. It’s quite a nice spring flower and is an alternative to red roses which can be so expensive. We’ve definitely got an order for red and purple tulips.”
She continued: “The extravagant gifts usually come at the end, on the day, when men think, ‘I must do something, I’ve forgotten Valentine’s Day – how many roses can I send?’. A couple of years ago we did one order that wanted 100, that was quite big. It wasn’t difficult to supply, roses are always available from the wholesalers, so even if the order comes in at the last minute we can still get more.”
Sarah also said it was a ‘common misconception’ that florists inflate their prices to cash in on Valentine’s trade.
“Anything that’s red goes up in price at Valentine’s Day, and that comes from the grower,” she said.
“We have to buy everything more expensively. The roses are already double the price and more than they normally are. It’s basic supply and demand.”
The shop tries to steer customers away from buying clichéed red roses, encouraging them to buy something with a more original meaning, Sarah added.
Traditionally, daffodils are a symbol of unrequited love, forget-me-nots are a sign of true love and violets are a symbol of faithfulness.
“I think people should use more imagination when they’re picking flowers,” Sarah said. “We try to recommend things like a mixed bouquet. Lilies are another popular one, although some people do still think lilies are for funerals.
“It’s mostly men that can be quite traditional, but there are some new men around who are aware of what their partner likes, rather than what they think they should be getting!
“I know you can go to the supermarket and buy flowers with the shopping, but to get a bouquet is still considered a luxury.
“It’s a feelgood item, I suppose. Flowers cheer people up. When you get a delivery to your workplace on Valentine’s Day it still causes a bit of a stir.”
At chocolate boutique Cocoa, on Ecclesall Road, staff are also primed for an increase today and tomorrow in the number of shoppers eager to buy their loved ones a special treat.
Kate Shepherd, who’s owned the shop for six-and-a-half-years with her friend Anne White, said confectionery is often seen as a safe last-minute present.
“I think everyone thinks they won’t get anything, until all of a sudden they think, ‘Oh my, what if my partner gets me something and I don’t get anything?’
“So it’s the day before and on the day that are busiest, really. We don’t have to panic if we’ve got Valentine’s stock in on the day. Most people are quite last-minute about it.
“I think Valentine’s is the most concentrated time of year after Mother’s Day.”
Cocoa’s shelves are filled with boxes of speciality chocolates, as well as jars of individual chocolates, and the shop is offering many Valentine’s delicacies such as heart-shaped pralines.
“We’re selling Edward Monkton chocolates, who usually sells greetings cards but now does chocolates. They’re quirky and humorous,” Kate said.
“We’ve also got Love Monkey chocolates – they’re quite popular because they’re a bit more masculine than the other chocolates. Lots of girls buy that one for their boyfriends or partners.
“We sell hampers as well which are really good, they’ve got a little bit of lots of different chocolates.”
She added: “Chocolates are definitely a good present for women and men. A lot of girls have already bought a present for their boyfriends and get a bit of chocolate on the side.
“Women are renowned for having a sweeter tooth than men, so men always go for chocolate for that reason. And it’s good to get a treat as a present.”
Kate said: “Women are usually a bit more careful, and will just be buying add-on presents, whereas men will be more tempted to buy something because it looks amazing. They tend not to care how much it costs!
“I think the packaging is really important. It’s the first thing that you see. I think sometimes it doesn’t really matter what’s inside the box as long as it looks good. That’s the first impression.”
Cocoa is opening late until 10pm on Valentine’s Day for the first time, Kate said.
“We’ve never done it before, it will be a bit of an experiment,” she said. “People might come for a little drink after they’ve been for a meal – maybe come in for a hot chocolate.”
DO
Do cook a nice dinner if you’ve forgotten to book a Valentine’s meal. Of course, if you’re hopeless in the kitchen, some of the higher-end supermarkets supply acceptable ready meals and dine-in deals with wine.
Do book a holiday or a spa weekend for a future date, then put the tickets in a Valentine’s card. It won’t be a treat on the day but it avoids disappointment.
Do consider a romantic night in with a DVD you’ll both enjoy and a few candles lit in the living room. Cinemas will most likely be packed with couples celebrating February 14 at the movies.
Do consider perfume as an alternative to buying flowers. There will be plenty of shops open late tonight selling quality fragrances.
DON’T
Don’t buy flowers from the petrol station. However tempting it might be for the last minute gift-buyer, a sad bunch of wilted chrysanthemums is no match for a carefully-selected bouquet of blooms from a proper florist.
Don’t buy household appliances as a gift for the fairer sex. Valentine’s Day is supposed to be extravagant, indulgent and romantic. A new iron will almost definitely send out the wrong message.
Don’t buy lingerie, or any other clothing, unless you’re absolutely sure of your partner’s correct size. Unwrapping a dress three sizes too big will see you driving back to the shops, receipt in hand, within the hour.
Don’t overspend in an attempt to compensate for your Valentine’s Day absent-mindedness.

Valentine’s Day: Spa Gift Ideas
One popular gift, or even destination, for Valetnine’s Day is the spa. With Valentine’s nearing, Patch is here to let you know what a few local spas and wellness centers have to offer.
Yemaya Massage Wellness – 120 North Main Street #126, New City – 845-634-3100
This spa has a lot of different possibilities for gift ideas. Owner Heather Koubek said a nice gift would be the discounted spa packages, with come with a combination aromatherapy massage of your choice, as well as either a scalp, foot or sinus relief treatment.
Those sessions usually last about an hour and a half or two hours, she said. The scalp, foot and sinus treatments are a bit more “playful,” she added. The sinus treatments are especially good for people with allergies, she said.
“In the hour-long massage, you’ll get what you really need,” Koubek said.
Yemaya’s massages are all the same price, $80, and individualized.
“We base it on your individual needs,” she said. “We treat you like a person and listen to what you have to say and what you’re looking for.”
Before the massage, they interview the customer about any areas he or she wants worked out, anywhere that’s been bothering them.
For Valentine’s Day, Yemaya is offering a deal on gift certificates where if you buy one you get one half off on a second.
Blissful Spa – 198 Main Street, Nyack – 845-353-6439
Owner Barbara Rosa said Blissful keeps prices low and takes appointments seven days a week.
One possible idea for Valentine’s Day, Rosa said, is to book a couples massage in Blissful’s couples room.
“It’s very popular. If you’re not comfortable, you’re side-by-side with someone else,” she said. “You’re fully-covered and we take out the only part we have to work on. The room’s cosy, the music’s good, it has soft lighting and the tables heat up. We do as much as we can to make it enjoyable and relaxing.”
She said Blissful also does facials, but they primarily stick to massages.
“We keep it concentrated on what we’re great at,” she said.
Blissful has seven rooms and offers gift certificates that don’t expire.

For Valentine’s Day, sales associate Jackie Russo said this spa, located in the shopping center at the corner of Route 59 and Middletown Road, is offering a massage and facial deal.
The deal is that you get both for just $99, and you have to purchase it on a gift card before Valentine’s Day. The card can be redeemed at anytime, but you have to get both the facial and massage on the same visit.
Russo also said they’re offering a three-month gift membership for $177 so people can try out their membership program, which normally costs $59 a month. With the membership, you get an hour-massage each month and then discounted rates for additional services. The three-month trial comes with three hour-massages and the discounted rates. She said they also offer membership packages for six months and 12 months.
